The Government Employees Pension Fund (GEPF) hosted a handover ceremony at the Rise Against Hunger Africa head offices in Aeroton on September 1, where two beneficiary organisations each received R1 million.

Rise Against Hunger Africa and the South African Mathematics Foundation (SAMF) received the donations following the GEPF’s Annual Charity Golf Day, which brought together the Fund and its stakeholders to raise funds in support of initiatives aimed at making a meaningful difference in communities.

Brian Nell from Rise Against Hunger Africa shared the organisation’s work and showcased how it makes an impact on a daily basis.

He said the donation would make a significant difference by enabling the organisation to provide food packs to communities and help ensure that no child goes to bed or school hungry.

“It is important to us that our contribution to society extends beyond our core responsibility. Through our social responsibility initiatives, we seek to support programmes that make a meaningful and sustainable impact in the communities where our members live,” said GEPF CEO Musa Mabesa.

“The GEPF Annual Golf Day was established in 2024 and has since become an important event in our annual calendar. Through this initiative, we, together with sponsors, mobilise resources towards programmes that address critical social areas such as food security, education and community development. We are proud to have partnered with organisations that drive impact in our communities,” said Mabesa.

Sibusiso Xaba, head of transaction banking in South Africa at Standard Bank, spoke about the importance of their contribution as a stakeholder in ensuring that children are nourished and able to reach their full academic potential.

He said, “According to the 2025 Hunger Index, 10% of the population is undernourished. This represents millions of people, including children, who depend on their communities for survival. For many of them, hunger is a daily reality. It is for this reason that we partnered with the GEPF.”

The donations will support a range of initiatives, from nutrition and early childhood development to teacher support and mathematics education.

The success of the GEPF Annual Charity Golf Day was made possible through the support of more than 15 sponsors and partners.
