President does oversight visit to Joburg

President undertakes oversight visit with the Provincial Executive Committee and leadership of Johannesburg Metro Council

President Cyril Ramaphosa held a two-day oversight to meet the Provincial Executive Committee (PCE) and the Johannesburg Metro Council leadership at the City of Johannesburg council chambers in Braamfontein on March 6 and 7.

The PCE presented to the president a five-year programme that aligns with the priorities of the seventh administration.

The meeting discussed various approaches to service delivery problems, including interventions to improve service delivery at the local government level.

“This is a pivotal year for SA, as we become the first African country to lead the G20. This visit is part of our efforts to strengthen co-operative governance and implement the district development model,’’ said Ramaphosa in his opening remarks, adding that the province’s priorities are to drive growth and create jobs.

Water and electricity interruptions that impact businesses, traffic light vandalism, dysfunctional street lights and rapidly deteriorating roads and bridges are some challenges constraining growth.

The president said that a year ago, he established the Presidential eThekwini Working Group with the support of local stakeholders. Working with them and the metro allowed them to unblock several challenges.

He said they would listen to their proposals on improving service delivery and enabling growth.

Ramaphosa said, “When our visitors leave after the G20 Leaders’ Summit, let them leave inspired by what they saw and experienced in Johannesburg.’’
