Eldos artist bring art closer to home
Following the success of Poety Nights and Art Exhibition, host Shinas Abdulla plans to host more events to keep the Eldorado Park art scene alive.
Local artist Shanaaz ‘BlackRose’ Abdulla launched Eldorado Park’s art community following the Open Mic Poetry Nights and Art Exhibition.
The event, at the Black Box in Ext 5, Eldorado Park, aims to provide a forum for local artists to be themselves and meet fellow artists.
The loneliness and desperation at the lack of art events and opportunities in Eldorado Park inspired Abdulla, a musician, poet, and visual artist.

“The problem I had was most, if not all, took place outside of Eldos. They used to host at beautiful locations but safety became an issue, especially being a woman,” Abdulla said.
“Transport is one problem. Most of these events are too far away, and are nighttime or early morning.”
She was concerned about how to get to the event and back home and whether she was travelling by taxi.
Despite the issues, she planned an event that featured local poets, visual artists, and musicians.

Visual artists included Jada Joseph, Evaine, Ashwin Webster, Roxanne Dickinson and Noleen. Poets included Sir Yodah, Leston Geduld, Clyde Vernon Morris, Roxanne Dickinson, Amieda Abdulla, and a photographer named CVM Photography.

The event was a success, with attendees praising the quality of the performances and the potential for networking with other creatives.
Abdulla’s goal was not only to provide a platform for artists to promote themselves but also to offer an environment where they could talk about financial opportunities and networking.

Her vision is to turn Eldorado Park into the artistic centre of Johannesburg, where individuals can visit and enjoy the best local art, music, and poetry.
Local businesses and inhabitants also supported the project, including Shandre Fernandez, who helped with decorations, Alistair of the Black Box, who provided the venue and Eldos FM.
“I am grateful for the backing from my family and friends, who urged me to carry out my dream.”
She hopes to arrange another event later this year, with more information to emerge soon.
