French artist visits Klipspruit West Secondary

Jean-Claude Desmerges is a French artist doing a 10-day residency in SA.

Art collective Asisebenze Art Atelier (AAA) is hosting French artist Jean-Claude Desmerges for a 10-day residency (February 8 to 19).

He visited Klipspruit West Secondary School on February 14 for a workshop with 20 learners.

This visit sees the artist immerse himself in the energy of Johannesburg before continuing to Cape Town.

The artist shows learners how he uses unconventional materials like charcoal.

The GM of AAA, Tanya Krain, said, “We are thrilled to welcome Jean-Claude Desmerges. He connects with his subjects, brings their stories to life through his art, and reflects the heart of what we do here, which is to celebrate African narratives and foster creative exchange.”

Desmerges uses unconventional materials like kitchen charcoal and cement bags. The learners joined him to draw portraits using charcoal and water, and he gave them individual lessons.

“Art, to me, is about human connection. Johannesburg’s inner city has a vitality that is impossible to ignore.

The learners take in the knowledge.

“I look forward to drawing inspiration from its rhythm, energy and people while working alongside other artists,” said Desmerges.

Krain added that they felt it imperative to come into local communities and introduce art and artists to the children.

The learners draw portraits with the help and guidance of Desmerges.
