Local artist talks music, identity, and African unity

Sereetsi's music reflects his cultural roots and serves as a call to action for African pride.

In an interview with Soweto Urban, Botswana-born musician Sereetsi and The Natives opened up about his musical journey, cultural identity and the importance of African unity.

With a career spanning over a decade, Sereetsi has established himself as a unique voice in the music industry, blending traditional Botswana rhythms with modern influences.

His latest album, Mabato, released in 2023, showcases his growth as an artist and his commitment to celebrating African heritage.

When asked about his musical influences, Sereetsi credited his childhood experiences growing up in a low-income neighbourhood in Botswana.

“I used to sneak into drinking holes to watch musicians play,” he reminisced.

“I was fascinated by the way they could improvise songs on the spot.”

Sereetsi’s music is not only a reflection of his cultural roots but also a call to action for African unity.

“I believe it’s time for Africans to see themselves as Africans first,” he said.

“We have been divided for too long. It is time for us to come together and take our place in the world.”

With a new album in the works, set for release later this year, Sereetsi promises to continue pushing the boundaries of his music.

“I am not a big fan of albums with too many songs. I want to create music that resonates with people, not just fills up space.”

As he prepares to embark on a South African tour later this year, Sereetsi’s message of unity and the celebration of African identity will resonate with fans across the continent.
