Eskom takes safety campaign to Dobsonville

The campaign aims to create awareness about the safe and efficient use of electricity.

Eskom intensified its winter safety campaign in Dobsonville, Soweto, at Kopanong Multipurpose Center on May 6. The campaign aims to raise awareness about the safe and efficient use of electricity.

While the power utility faces a surge every winter because of transformer overloads and failures, this is often due to illegal connections, meter tampering, and unauthorised access to the network.

Eskom Gauteng spokesperson Innocentia Zabala said, “These actions not only cause prolonged power outages but also put innocent lives at risk, especially those of children and property.”

The community members discussed topics such as making sure that they are not illegally connected, as that affects them in the long run, saving electricity by unplugging appliances, and checking how much electricity their appliances use, as that also counts.

Residents had complaints, and one of the main complaints was the load reduction, how they are never notified on time, and how, at times, it takes more hours than expected to repair.

On May 7, the team will be at Thabajabula Secondary School in Klipspruit; on Thursday, we will be at Sam Tambani Hall, formerly known as Sadaac Hall in Meadowlands, and on Friday, at Diepkloof Hall.
