GDE condemns brutal killing of 14-year-old Likhona Fose
The brutal killing of 14-year-old Likhona Fose has left a community in mourning and sparked urgent calls for justice and protection.
Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane expressed sadness over the death of 14-year-old Likhona Fose, a Grade Eight learner at Ikusasalethu Secondary School in Braamfischerville.
The girl’s mutilated body was found in Roodepoort on June 1.
In response, the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) swiftly deployed its Psycho-Social Support Unit to provide counselling and trauma support to learners and teachers affected by the tragedy.

Chiloane condemned the murder, saying, “As the department, we cannot begin to express how deeply disheartened we are by the loss of Likhona, a girl who had a bright future ahead.”
The department is urging law enforcement to apprehend those responsible for this heinous act.
The incident sparked an outpouring of support for the learner’s family and school community. The GDE is working closely with the school to ensure those affected receive necessary support during this difficult time.
Amid National Child Protection Week, this incident reminds us of the importance of protecting children’s rights and safety.
The department stands united in condemning all acts of GBVF, especially those affecting learners.
CoJ Speaker of council Nobuhle Mthembu said this was a dark moment for the city and country.
“We should all hang our heads in shame for allowing such horror to befall one of our children. The murder of Likhona is not only a crime; it is a betrayal of our values and a stain on our conscience as a society that should protect our children,” said Mthembu.
She said, as the Speaker, that she reiterates her call for every resident, parent, community leader and institution to rise and be counted in the fight against child abuse.
“I urge SAPS and all relevant authorities to assure the people of Braamfischerville and the entire CoJ that they will pursue justice without fear or favour.”
