Local schools mark World Environmental Day
Pimville schools took a significant step toward a greener future by celebrating World Environment Day, fostering environmental awareness and a sense of responsibility among students.
A healthy environment, as defined by global health organisations, is one that is safe, supportive of healthy lifestyles, and free from hazards.
In celebration of World Environment Day, learners from Paul Mosaka Primary and Emshukantambo Secondary School gathered at the Pimville Community Hall on June 5.
The event, hosted by Tebogo Tema in collaboration with Pikitup and other key stakeholders, brought together students and community members for a day of education, exploration, and environmental awareness. The theme for this year was ‘No to Plastic Pollution’.

Students learned about indigenous plants, sustainable planting methods, and the delicate balance of ecosystems. Interactive environmental games helped reinforce the importance of protecting the planet and becoming eco-conscious citizens.
Ignite Manganyi, a member of the Green Development Foundation, spoke about the organisation’s mission:
“As an organisation, we engage the public on better ways to keep our environment clean.

“We reduce the stress on landfill sites through circular economy initiatives and township-based recycling, which also provides a source of income for many.”
Banele Ndlovu, a self-taught environmentalist from Kgabiso ya Lefase, shared her passion:
“My goal is to teach young children the importance of caring for the environment and the value of recycling.” She also led a presentation on different types of metals and how to sort them properly.

Event host and environmentalist Tebogo Tema closed the day with heartfelt words:
“This day means a lot to me. It shows that by working together as a community, we can achieve great things. To the young ones—commit to the seeds that are planted. Water them, nurture them with love, and watch them grow.”
