Police launch manhunt after councillor shot at home
A shocking attack on a Joburg councillor has raised fresh concerns about the safety of public representatives. As the police search for the shooters, officials call for urgent action to protect councillors from escalating threats.
The police in Naledi have launched a manhunt after Ward 130 Clr Thulani Buthelezi (49) was shot and injured at his Emdeni, Soweto, home on June 7 at 19:00.
Johannesburg district corporate communications officer Mpho Tshetlhane said the victim was in his room when three unknown armed men approached, shot him, and fled the scene.
“Clr Buthelezi sustained a bullet wound to the upper body, but the motive remains unknown,’ said Tshetlhane.
She added that no arrests were made, and police investigations are ongoing.

CoJ Speaker Nobuhle Mthembu reiterated concerns about councillor safety and security following Buthelezi’s recent shooting.
“This shocking incident is a stark reminder of the threats faced by our public representatives. I strongly condemn this act of violence and reiterate the urgent need to safeguard councillors across the city.
“I call on all councillors who have experienced intimidation, or suspect they are being followed or targeted, to come forward and report these incidents immediately so law enforcement agencies can be brought in to intervene,” said Mthembu.
Mthembu urged all political parties to actively protect their members. He emphasised that parties must do more than condemn violence; they must empower and support their councillors by helping them report threats to their safety. He stressed the collective responsibility to safeguard democratically elected representatives.

“As the local government elections approach, political tensions in our city are likely to rise. This volatile period is marked by intense competition for positions, requiring vigilance and a commitment to peace.
“Regardless of political differences, we must practice tolerance. No councillor should be forced to live in fear,” she said.
Mthembu extended heartfelt wishes to Buthelezi.
’I wish Clr Thulani Buthelezi a full and speedy recovery. Our thoughts are with him, his family, and the Ward 130 community during this difficult time.”
The police urge community members with information about the incident to contact their nearest police station, call Crime Stop on 08600 10111, or use the MySAPS App to submit anonymous tip-offs.
