Meadowlands community rallies in prayer to combat social ills
The Gauteng Department of Community Safety and partners hosted a prayer event in Meadowlands, uniting the community against GBV, crime and other social ills.
The Gauteng Department of Community Safety, alongside the SAPS, the Devine Intervention Approach (DIA), faith-based groups, and local NGOs, hosted the Umanyano Prayer event at Saadac Community Hall in Meadowlands Zone 9 on July 10.
Before the prayer began, community members and church members from various denominations raised their voices against GBVF.
The event aimed to pray against social ills affecting the community, including GBV, femicide, substance abuse, crime, human trafficking, teenage pregnancy, poverty and unemployment.

Kate Mahlaule, the leader of the Brigades, expressed concern over the disheartening increasing cases of these social challenges, noting that poverty and unemployment often exacerbate these issues.
Attendees shared testimonies of overcoming adversity, followed by praise and worship sessions to express faith and gratitude.
Caswell Xaba, a Diepkloof resident, urged men to protect and love women and children rather than harm them, stating, “We want this prayer ceremony to have a positive impact, and we hope for change.”

Reverend Fingo Mjikeliso emphasised responsible manhood, saying, “Men don’t abuse; they protect.

We can’t live in a country where women don’t feel safe. These issues must stop, so that we can have a better country.
Belinda Ratyana, a singer and dancer from Naledi, concluded, “God is the answer. It’s never too late to start afresh and unlock new doors when you allow God to use you.”
