Lilian Ngoyi Street upgrade 86% complete
The City of Johannesburg reports 86% completion of phase one in the Lilian Ngoyi Street upgrade, with tunnel construction finished and safety systems being installed. The first phase is set to open by the end of August, easing traffic flow in the area.
The CoJ announced that the rehabilitation of Lilian Ngoyi Street, between Harrison and Kruis streets, is nearing completion, with 86% of the construction work finalised.
The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) undertook the project in two phases, with the first phase scheduled for completion by the end of August.
The construction of new and reinforced tunnels is complete, as are the backfilling and compaction works.

The remainder of the project scope is progressing at the anticipated pace and includes constructing pavement layers and installing gas, heat, smoke detection and ventilation systems, which will effectively monitor gas build-up and venting of tunnels to protect against any future gas-related incidents.
JRA CEO Zweli Nyathi said, “The contractor has performed exceptionally well in ensuring the projected timelines are met, despite adverse weather earlier in the year.
“Working closely with the JRA, a robust work plan was developed by extending the daily construction hours, including weekends, to eliminate any possibilities of delays”.
He said they perform pavement construction in the evenings to minimise foot traffic disruption and reduce inconvenience to nearby businesses.
Lilian Ngoyi Street (between Harrison and Kruis Street), and the affected north-south roads such as Joubert, Rissik and Eloff streets will be open to traffic once the first phase is complete at the end of August.
The second phase, scheduled for September 2025 until August 2026, will focus on rejuvenating an additional 1.8km of the street, stretching between Ntemi Piliso and End streets.
