JMPD warns against illegal pavement parking to protect pedestrians
The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) reminds motorists that parking on pavements is illegal and endangers pedestrians.
The JMPD has issued a stern warning against parking on pavements, emphasising that it is both illegal and a serious safety hazard for pedestrians.
Pavements are designed exclusively for pedestrian use and not for vehicles. When motorists park on pavements, they force pedestrians – including children, the elderly, and people with disabilities – to walk on the road, putting their lives at risk.

To ensure compliance with road safety laws, JMPD officers have begun issuing citations for illegal parking on pavements. The department urges all drivers to respect traffic regulations and keep pavements clear to make the streets safe and accessible for everyone.
“Let’s all play our part in respecting road and traffic regulations to create a safer Johannesburg for all residents,” the JMPD sai in a press statement.
