Eldorado Park seniors enjoy a special trip to Joburg Zoo

Eldorado Park’s elderly residents traded their quiet mornings for laughter and lions during a special Senior Citizens’ Month outing to the Johannesburg Zoo, made possible by local partners.

Elderly residents from Eldorado Park and surrounding areas had an early start on October 16.

They had to pack their bags for a trip to the Johannesburg Zoo to celebrate Senior Citizens’ Month.

Ward 18 committee member for the transport portfolio, Christopher Booysen, Johannesburg Southern Suburbs Taxi Association (JSSTA), popularly known as the Eldos Taxi Association, and Kasi Transie, who provided free transport, organised the initiative.

The zoo opened its doors to seniors without charge throughout October.

The JSSTA provided five minibus taxis to transport 75 residents from Eldorado Park, Kliptown, Klipspruit, Nancefield Farm, Slovo Park, Freedom Park and Naturena.

The association will accommodate more people this year, with a second trip planned for October 23.
For some, it was their first time joining the annual outing.

Rabia Franks (76) from Ext 7 was excited to meet her family and enjoy the day, “I am looking forward to seeing my cousins, brothers and sisters, and enjoying myself,” she said.

“We older people can’t walk too far anymore, but we’re praying that the Lord gives us strength so we don’t get tired or sick. God will look after us, and we are praying for the driver to take us there safely.”

Regular attendee Beryl Jacobs was thrilled to be part of the trip again, “This is my third year. The first time we travelled by bus, last year by taxi, and this year makes it the second time using taxis,” she said.

She added that last year’s trip was a joyful reunion.

“It was nice to meet old school friends again. It’s always exciting for us seniors to go out because many don’t get that chance often,” she said.

JSSTA secretary Nora Manjaya said last year’s trip was only one day, which excluded some people.

“That’s why we decided to make it two days this time,” she said, adding that communication was previously challenging because not all seniors have access to WhatsApp.

Booysen thanked the JSSTA and the Johannesburg Zoo for their continued partnership.

“As we know, October is Transport Month, and the CoJ, in partnership with the zoo, offers free entrance during this period,” he said.

“I worked with the JSSTA to ensure that Kliptown, Slovo Park, Freedom Park, Naturena and Klipspruit seniors were included in this year’s trip.

“This initiative gives our senior citizens a chance to get out, connect with others and enjoy themselves. Many look forward to it all year,” he concluded.
