Community unites for cleaner air in Diepkloof

NKA leads a successful “Breathing Better Together” campaign, promoting clean air, recycling, and environmental awareness in Diepkloof.

The Ngaphandle Kokukholwa Akathokozi (NKA) organisation recently hosted a successful clean air and air pollution awareness campaign under the theme ‘Breathing Better Together’ in Diepkloof.

The campaign was a collaborative effort supported by the City of Johannesburg, Breathe Cities, Seriti Institute (NPC), Green-In-Action NPO, Johannesburg Pikitup, and the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE).

It aimed to raise awareness about the impact of air pollution on community health and promote cleaner, more sustainable living environments.

The day began with an early morning clean-up around the Diepkloof Multipurpose Hall, a site often affected by illegal dumping. Led by NKA’s Youth Mature Champions Club and Elderly Champion Club, the clean-up showcased the organisation’s strong community leadership and commitment to creating safer, cleaner public spaces.

The attendees successfully cleaned up the area in Diepkloof.

Following the clean-up, community members participated in an educational awareness session on recycling, waste management, and air quality improvement.

The session highlighted how proper waste disposal and responsible community behaviour can significantly reduce pollution and improve overall air quality.

The event was attended by several distinguished guests, including Ward 29 Clr Ismael Steenkamp, who commended NKA and its partners for taking practical steps to engage residents in environmental action.

“Clean air and a clean environment begin with us. This campaign shows what is possible when communities take ownership of their surroundings,” said Steenkamp.
