Soweto NPO brings warmth and kindness to elderly residents
The African Women and Youth League visited the Soweto Home for the Aged, donating food and uplifting the spirits of residents through acts of love and compassion.
The Pimville branch of the African Women and Youth League (AWYL) engaged with the elderly at the Soweto Home for the Aged in Mofolo Central on October 28.
The visit was also marked by generous food donations, bringing smiles to the residents.
AWYL chairperson Cynthia Gambu told the Urban News that the NGO plays a vital role in supporting those in need, having assisted school learners, care homes and even community members.

“This is not our first visit here. We have supported the elderly before by donating winter necessities and cleaning products. Everything we do comes from our pockets; we don’t gain anything from it.
“Our work is driven by love and a desire to help others because we believe that giving back to the community makes a real difference,” said Gumbi.
She added that their work did not end at the Soweto Home for the Aged. They plan on donating in other areas before year-end. They also intend to revisit the home with more items for the residents.

Elsie Khumalo, who lives at the home, said they enjoyed visits like these, as they could talk, share stories and enjoy themselves.
“We enjoy what is happening here, but hope that next time, community members can join us.

“Most visits usually come from outsiders, and it would be wonderful to share these moments with our community, too,” said Khumalo.
Skills facilitator at the home, Rosinah Mokgathi, said they were grateful for the visit, as it meant a lot to the residents and showed them that they are still loved and supported.
“Visitors like these warm our hearts. Many of the elderly here don’t have families, so seeing people show up for them is incredible.

“We hope more stakeholders step forward to support them because every act of kindness makes a difference and shows them they are loved. After all, they are our parents,” she said.
