Soweto and Eldorado Park schools unite for climate action at Johannesburg Botanical Gardens

Learners from Soweto and Eldorado Park schools joined environmental organisations at the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens to mark the International Day of Climate Action.

The EnviroGreen Projects Waste Management Solutions and Education Organisation, in partnership with UJ HPW Schools (UJ Academy and the high school of the University of Johannesburg), celebrated the International Day of Climate Action (IDCAD) at the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens in Emmarentia on October 24.

The day brought together various stakeholders and schools from Soweto and Eldorado Park.

This global event raises awareness and inspires meaningful action to address climate change, protect the planet and create a sustainable future.

The event was not just about celebrating IDCAD but also about sharing information, knowledge and engagement opportunities for learners through interactions with key climate institutions and organisations.

Learners gained insight into the subjects of energy transition and the just energy transition, their differences, and how they impact climate change.

Event organiser, Tebogo Tema, said he hoped the event educated those who attended, “The mission and vision of EnviroGreen Projects is to instil knowledge about waste and its role in the climate and overall environment in our local communities, hoping that attendees take all the information they received and apply it in their daily lives,”said Tema.

Emshukantambo, Lancea Vale, Eldorado Park, Silver Oaks, Eldomaine, Klipspruit, Willows, Missourilaan, and Kliptown secondary schools delivered presentations on how government and society could balance economic growth with climate action.
