JMPD arrests 174 motorists for drunk driving in festive season crackdown
The Johannesburg Metro Police Department has stepped up festive season roadblocks and patrols as part of its zero-tolerance approach to drunk driving.
A total of 174 motorists have been arrested for drunk driving during intensified festive season law-enforcement operations conducted by the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD).
The arrests were made during high-visibility roadblocks, roving patrols and targeted operations carried out across all regions of the city between December 22 and 28 — a period authorities have described as the most critical phase of the 2025 festive season.
According to the department, the campaign forms part of a broader strategy to reduce road fatalities and improve safety for residents and visitors.

JMPD Chief of Police, Commissioner Patrick Jaca, stressed that the arrests represent meaningful interventions rather than mere statistics.
“Every single arrest is more than just a number — it represents a potential tragedy averted and a life saved from the hands of a reckless driver,” Jaca said.
The department confirmed that officers continue to maintain a 24-hour presence along identified hotspots and major routes across Johannesburg.
Motorists have been urged to take responsibility for their safety and that of other road users by designating a sober driver, using e-hailing or public transport when consuming alcohol, and complying with traffic laws.
“Our message remains clear: if you choose to drink and drive, you will be arrested,” the department said.
