Soweto learners receive R30 000 for top matric results

Makubenjalo Restaurant hands out cash vouchers to top-performing students and offers mentorship to guide them through tertiary studies.

Makubenjalo Restaurant celebrated matriculants who excelled in their final exams by handing out R30 000 cash vouchers to Bopasenatla and Immaculate secondary schools on January 23.

Two learners from each school received R10 000 and R5 000, respectively, depending on how well they performed in their finals.

The owner of Makubenjalo Restaurant, Katlego ‘KG’ Bogatsu, said the initiative is to motivate learners to put in effort and hard work in their exams, as well as to assist them with their tertiary preparation.

“Today, we celebrate and award the top four best-performing matriculants from these schools. This is part of Makubenjalo’s community initiatives.

“We hope to award more learners in the future. We want to invest more in education than in other things. We want to see more learners from Diepkloof graduating and working in healthy and good environments and becoming business owners,” Bogatsu said.

He added that the learners will receive mentorship from their team as they prepare for life after school.

“Even when they continue with their studies, we hope we can still help where we can, but most importantly, to keep them grounded and motivated amidst the challenges they will face in the next phase of their education.”

These two schools are among the top-performing in Soweto, with Bopasenatla achieving a 100% pass rate and Immaculate achieving a 95%.

“As Makubenjalo Restaurant, we encourage our top four learners to be focused. Life does not end in matric; there is still a long way to go. There will be challenges and hurdles, but it is important that they stand up for what they believe in.

“From now on, we hope to have good relationships with the schools, since this will now be an annual initiative. We hope next year the amounts on the vouchers will be more and that we will have more learners who perform exceptionally well.”
