Primary schools receive scholar patrol equipment as part of a road safety initiative aimed at protecting young pedestrians.

BODY: PUTCO and its partners have taken road safety messages to Soweto communities and schools, with scholar patrol equipment handed over to two primary schools.

A pedestrian road safety campaign was held in Soweto to improve awareness among community members and learners.

The programme began with an engagement at the Pennyville pedestrian risk area, where officials shared road and pedestrian safety messages with community members.

The campaign then moved to Leratong Primary School and Zithathele Primary School, where learners were educated on key road safety principles.

PUTCO spokesperson Lindokuhle Xulu said the messages included safe road-crossing practices, pedestrian awareness and responsible behaviour when using public transport.

As part of the initiative, PUTCO and participating stakeholders handed over scholar patrol equipment to the two schools.

Xulu said the equipment is expected to assist scholar patrols in helping learners safely navigate busy roads around their schools.

He said the campaign forms part of ongoing efforts to promote safer roads and protect pedestrians, particularly children.
