Tshebedisanong wins Soweto Tennis League

Tshebedisanong Primary School from Central Western Jabavu emerged as the inaugural champions of the Soweto Schools Tennis League after beating Mohloding Primary School in the finals.

All the drama took place at the Arthur Ashe Tennis complex in Jabavu.

Despite the school winning the championship, the tournament was all about promoting tennis in Soweto and history was made at the complex after six long weeks of the mini tennis league, where the best of the best was decided.

Supported by the Department of Sports and Recreation, Tennis South Africa (TSA) launched the league in September and junior players between the ages of eight and 12 participated every Wednesday and Friday.

Participating schools were Rutegang Primary, Molaetsa Primary, Makola Primary, Igugu Primary, Tshebedisanong Primary and Mohloding Primary.

These six schools played each other on a round robin until the finals.

Tshebedisano’s principal, Joseph More, said they are delighted to have won the trophy and over the years they have encouraged their pupils to take up the game.

“We hope that more of our pupils will join us at the complex to develop and promote the game in the school and Soweto,” said More.

To form this league, TSA adopted the International Tennis Federation model of coaching and the theory of it being that teaching tennis should be progressed according to the age and physical growth of a child.

TSA president, Bongani Zondi said his intention for next year is to have more schools participating in next year’s Soweto League.
