Metropoilitan Cup is back with a bang

R35 000 cheque awaits winners of the Metropoilitan Cup.

The annual Metropolitan Premier Cup is back again with more playtime for SA teams.

The draw has been made and the competition will take place on April 16 to 21. A total of 32 teams will take part in this tourney and representing Soweto will be Kaizer Chiefs and Senaoane Gunners FC, which is owned by former Mamelodi Sundowns player, Mike “Nanana” Ntombela.

The team will be competing against tough teams including PLS clubs such as the 2010 champs Supersport United, Bidvest Wits, Mamelodi Sundowns and Ajax Cape Town.

Winners will take home a prestigious trophy, gold medals and a whooping R35 000 cheque.

Runners up will walk away with R20 000 while the player of the tournament and top goal scorer will get R3 000 and R2 000 respectively for their accomplishments. This competition will be running for the 26th successive year.

It has produced a lot of professional players including Benni McCarthy, Nasief Morris, Matthew Booth and Steven Pienaar. Ajax Amsterdam and Bafana Bafana player, Thulani Serero gained valuable experience from his participation in this tournament.

Daine Klate played in this competition too.

Belinda Faulkner of Metropolitan said they have worked hard in providing the resources to develop young talent with the view to seeing them become the stars of tomorrow.

Metropolitan’s involvement in youth football sponsorship has been to recognise the need to address issues that affect young players off the field, as they encounter some of the challenges of growing into manhood.

The tournament runs throughout the Easter weekend, with the final being contested on April 21 at 3pm.
