Depleted Maritzburg to face champions in league opener
Team of Choice have mountain to climb against a star studded Sundowns side.
The kick-off of the 2014/15 Premier Soccer League season tonight, will see last season’s Absa Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns starting the defence of their title against the Team of Choice Maritzburg United at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.
Mamelodi Sundowns spokesperson Kabelo Mosito said the club is well prepared for tonight’s game and that they expect nothing but the three points.
Mosito said this match will set the tone for the season and the coach’s plans in retaining the title.
“All the players are mentally and physically fit for today’s match,” said Mosito.
Maritzburg United who held an unbeaten record against the defending champions last season have seven key players who won’t feature in tonight’s match.
According to club spokesperson Brian Zuma four foreign players John Paintsil, Mike Mohammed, Khumbulani Banda and Terrance Mandaz are at home due to the lack of work permits as a result of Home Affairs’ laws.
Zuma said the three other players Abel Mabaso, Sibusiso Kumalo and Kwanda Mngonyama will be left out as they are on loan from Mamelodi Sundowns.
“We still expect a win from the lads that remain in our squad,” said Zuma.
Kick-off is at 8pm.
