Central Gauteng Athletics league season concludes

Athletes show off great talent at 2023 CGA Cross Country Championships.

Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) hosted its Provincial Cross Country Championships on August 19 at Kagiso Sports Complex following a successful six-league season.

The sub-veteran, veteran, master and grandmaster men athletes set the tone for the day, running a distance of 8km.

Raphael Segodi opened the podium with a victory in a time of 25:55, while Dorocious Makhobalo of Kempton Park Road Runners came second in a time of 26:19.

Athletes delivered their best at the CGA Provincial Cross Country Championships on August 19.

The podium was completed by Rirhanzdu Rhangani who finished in a time of 26:55 to claim the bronze medal.

In the master men category, the CGA Athletes Commission chairperson, Zongamele Dyubeni, led by example to claim the top spot in a time of 28:12.

“In the boys U14 event, Tyran Brooks of Boxer dominated to successfully defend his first place. Brooks obtained the gold medal on the provincial podium clocking 13:05,” said CGA communications coordinator Nongcebo Siziba.

Taking home silver was Siyanda Malone, who finished in a time of 13:24.

In the third position with a bronze medal was Sipho Elias Mollo.

“One of the fascinating and exciting events of the day was the boys U17 4km event where we saw the boys battle it out on the championships course.

“Realeboga Smith dominated the race from the first lap to claim first place on the provincial podium in a time of 19:02. Claiming the silver position was Oratile Mashigo and third was Sphiwe Makhoba.”

In the seniors’ races, particularly the 10km senior women’s race, Cacisile Sosibo successfully defended her 2022 provincial title with an impressive and improved performance in a time of 35:48.

Settling for the second position, in a time of 39:14, was Farida Zwane and Kathryn van Meter took bronze.

“The championships were concluded with the 4km senior men and women races which Cian Oldknow claimed the provincial title in a time of 13:23,” said Siziba.

Sisanda Dumisa settled for the second position and Bernadene Mcloud took the third position.

After competing at the CGA Provincial Cross Country Championships on August 19, CGA athletes are training for the National Cross Country Championships, which will take place on September 16 in Gqeberha.

In the post championships interview, CGA Cross Country chairperson Val Brentano said she is confident that the province will be sending a strong team to the 2023 Cross Country National Championships.

“The event was buzzing from the onset, and we sold out of our pancakes and boerewors rolls way ahead of our allocated time,” said Karen.

She thanked each volunteer and everyone who donated something to make the market a success.

Residents also enjoyed a visit from Sergeant van Wyngart from Sandringham Police Station and her social welfare team.
The sergeant and officers helped to raise awareness about the needs of the elderly.
