Spartans FC hold Roodepoort United to goalless draw

Spartans FC held Roodepoort United to a goalless draw in the Hollywoodbets Men's Regional League.

Local club Spartans FC played to a goalless draw against Roodepoort United FC during the highly contested Hollywoodbets Men’s Regional League, at Ext 6 soccer field in Eldorado Park on November 23.

Both sides created goal-scoring opportunities in both halves but failed to convert.

In a post-match interview, Spartans coach Phuthi Mophuthi shared his thoughts on the team’s recent draw.

The match, which ended in a 0-0 stalemate, was described by the coach as a ‘typical 0-0 game’ that lacked clear-cut chances.

Despite the draw, the coach expressed satisfaction with the result, considering the team’s current rebuilding phase.

Roodepoort United FC built up many attacking chances but could not net the decider.

“We are happy with the draw, considering where the team we just played against is on the log and where we are,” he said.

The coach attributed the team’s defensive solidity to their cautious approach, which was necessitated by the late registration of players.

“Defensively, we were sound. We were good in all phases except for the final third,” he noted.

Looking ahead, the coach is optimistic about the team’s prospects, once they have registered their desired players.

“Hopefully, by January, we will have a full team, and then we can really judge where the team is.

“We are not making excuses, but we are still rebuilding. Spartans are an ambitious team, and we are looking forward to the second half of the season,” he concluded.

Coach Mbulelo ‘Sixty’ Phanga of Roodepoort United FC was left underwhelmed by his team’s performance, despite securing a draw.

“My boys were not up to scratch, we were making many mistakes, and we should have lost the game,” he admitted.

Phanga is already looking to the next match, hinting at changes to the lineup. “We need to refresh the team and we will refresh it.”

The Spartans currently sit in the bottom four of the league table, but the coach is confident that the team will improve once they have strengthened their squad.
