The bustling township of Soweto will once again come alive when the third instalment of the Soweto Cabal 5km fun run and the 10km race takes place from the University of Johannesburg, Soweto Campus on Chris Hani Road on August 2.

The lead sponsor for the race is Telkom, with Clicks, Amka Products, Thesele, Bluu Car Rental, The Sweat Shop, Rand Stadium Toyota, NESS Consulting and Temotio Sports as supporting sponsors.

Both races are open to all club runners, professional athletes, and social runners.

This year, the organisers are capping entries at 3 000 runners. The race has experienced a steady and organic growth, with 1 400 participants in 2024 and a field of 2 300 runners in 2025.

The 10km race will start at 07:00, while the 5km fun run will start at 07:15.

Last year’s event was won by Lucky Mohale from Nedbank Running Club and Florence Kemunto from Rainbow Running Club.

Rio Matlhaku, chairperson of Soweto Cabal Athletic Club, said the club aims to encourage residents of Soweto and nearby townships to use the race as a way of improving their fitness and looking after their wellness.

The race has been characterised by a communal spirit of joy and fun. The route goes past some of the famous landmarks like Maponya Mall, Kenny’s Brick and Tile and the Soweto Country Golf Club.

The executive for regional development at Telkom consumer and small business, Dr Mbuso Nzama, said they believe that possibility begins when communities come together.

Since the inaugural race in 2024, Soweto Cabal Athletic Club has undertaken several community social impact initiatives.

In the last two years, the club donated sanitary towels to 800 girls at Thaba Jabula Senior Secondary School close to the UJ Campus.

The club also donated 200 school shoes to Nonto Primary in Dlamini, Empumalanga Primary in Meadowlands and Qobosheane Primary in Diepkloof as part of a programme of honouring three of its members who have passed away.
