S’bu Malawyer marks 25-year solo career with anniversary concert

This is a celebration of S’bu Malawyer being in the game while empowering other upcoming artists and producers

Kwaito music lovers are gearing up to celebrate the 25th anniversary of solo artist Sibusiso Ntshangase, known as S’bu Malawyer, at the Eyethu Lifestyle Centre on August 2.

The celebration will also honour 30 years of kwaito music.

As S’bu was, at some stage, part of musical groups that opened doors for him in the music industry, he believes it is important that he returns the favour by giving a platform to other upcoming artists.

In the early days of theatre, S’bu got a part in Gibson Kente’s stage show What A Shame.

He was later introduced to music maestro Sello ‘Chicco’ Twala by Lindelani Mkhize.

In 1997, S’bu released his first solo album, Amalawyer, and along the way, he was established as a bona fide solo artist.

The success of his debut album gave him the confidence to release his 1998 follow-up album, Mzala, which featured the group TKZee and sold 45 000 copies.

In 1999, S’bu took a break from performing as a solo artist and became instrumental in the formation of the collaborative group TKZee Family, which consisted of S’bu, Tokollo, Zwai, Kabelo, Loyiso, Gwaiza and Dr. Mageu.

In 2000, S’bu recorded his third solo album, InjaYangasese, which featured the highly sought-after jazz vocalist Gloria Bosman. With this album, S’bu laid the foundation for a new musical direction.

With 20 years of experience in the music industry, S’bu has partnered with a number of kwaito legends.
