Springs runner earns 28th Comrades medal alongside son in unforgettable family finish

Springs Striders runner Karin Smith completed her 28th Comrades Marathon at the age of 67, sharing a memorable finish with her son, Janis.

Among the Springs Striders Athletics Club members who completed this year’s Comrades Marathon is Karin Smith, who crossed the finish line for the 28th time.

The 67-year-old runner said receiving her 28th Comrades medal symbolises her optimistic approach to life. To her, the event is more than just a race, but an annual physical, emotional and spiritual journey.

“Although number 28 is just a number, it is also a symbol of how I keep moving forward, no matter what challenges arise. This year’s Comrades slogan, ‘Ska Fela Moya Don’t Give Up’, perfectly reflects that philosophy,” Karin said.

The event had a strong family focus, with Karin and her son Janis running together. Janis’ twin sister, Madeli, also took part, running alongside her husband, Hein, who is Karin’s son-in-law.

“I feel incredibly blessed and grateful to have run alongside my youngest son. We started together, stayed together and finished together.

“We supported each other through the tough uphill sections and enjoyed the faster downhill stretches,” she said

She also recalled their special moments during the race, such as laughing together and receiving support from spectators.

“The moment that stands out most was the spark between Janis and me when we realised that we were going to finish together and comfortably achieve our goal time.

“Crossing the finish line side by side in 10 hours and 53 minutes made all the hard work worthwhile and created a memory that I will treasure forever,” Karin said warmly.

They started in different batches, and all completed the marathon. Karin expressed her pride in her daughter’s achievement.

“I am extremely proud of her achievement. Completing a back-to-back after starting a new job and managing significant time constraints required determination, discipline and commitment. Watching her succeed was very special,” she said.

The twins are the youngest of Karin’s five children. Sharing the Comrades’ journey over the years has been a heartwarming experience for her. Karin talked about what motivates her to keep returning to the marathon each year.

“Comrades continually teach me lessons about perseverance, resilience, gratitude and humility. Every year is different, and every race presents new challenges and opportunities for growth.

“What keeps drawing me back is not only the race itself, but also the people. I have built friendships with fellow runners that have enriched my life. The camaraderie, encouragement and shared experiences are priceless,” she said.

She expressed her appreciation for the Springs Striders Athletics Club and her Smurfs support team.

“The support, friendship and sense of belonging within the club make every Comrades journey even more meaningful.

“My husband, daughter and in-laws were there every step of the way, providing encouragement, practical support and endless enthusiasm,” Karin said.
