Springs Tigers celebrate Youth Day with Vets Team launch and trophy clash

Families, coaches, players and community members came together for a festive Youth Day celebration that highlighted unity, remembrance and sport.

Springs Tigers Football Club celebrated a memorable event that brought together players, families, supporters, and the wider community as part of the Youth Day celebration on June 16.

The club’s founder, Shalom Mazibuko, told the Springs Advertiser that one of the highlights of the day was a special exhibition match between the newly formed Springs Tigers Vets Team and the Springs Tigers Senior Team.

The vets consisted of club coaches and the fathers of players from the club, and they were playing their very first official match.

He said that the vets’ team was coached by special guest, Washington ‘DC’ Tsotetsi, the current goalkeeper coach of Leicesterford City FC and a former goalkeeper for Platinum Stars.

The senior team was led by head coach Elijah Ngobeni, affectionately known as Coach Bee.

He explained that the atmosphere was electric as supporters turned out in large numbers to witness the much-anticipated clash between experience and energy.

Throughout the day, various stalls were set up, and the club received tremendous community support, making the celebration a great success.

“Before kick-off, both teams walked onto the field together and proudly sang the South African National Anthem in remembrance of the young people who lost their lives during the Soweto Uprising. It was a powerful moment that reflected the significance of Youth Day,” said Mazibuko.

Mazibuko highlighted that the match itself lived up to expectations. The senior team opened the scoring, but the vets quickly responded with an equaliser just minutes later.

He said that the game remained evenly contested, with both teams creating opportunities and showing great determination. However, just before halftime, the senior team found a second goal, taking a narrow 2–1 lead into the break.

In the second half, youthful energy began to take its toll. As fatigue became evident among the vets, the senior team capitalised, adding four more goals to extend their lead.

“The vets were presented with an opportunity to reduce the deficit when they were awarded a penalty after a reckless challenge inside the penalty area, but unfortunately, the chance went begging.

“At the final whistle, the senior team emerged victorious with a 6-1 win,” shared Mazibuko.

After the game, Mazibuko indicated that the Vets team proudly received their silver medals, while the senior team were awarded gold medals and lifted the Springs Tigers Youth Day Trophy.

He added that beyond the result, the day was about unity, community, remembrance, and celebration.

Mazibuko said that it was a memorable occasion that successfully honoured Youth Day while marking the official launch of the club’s vets team.

The club extended its sincere gratitude to all players, coaches, volunteers, sponsors, stall operators, parents, and supporters who contributed to making the event a resounding success.
