Springs residents urge community to vote as registration weekend concludes

As voter registration weekend concluded, Springs residents shared why they believe every vote counts and the changes they hope to see in their communities.

As Sunday marked the final day of the voter registration weekend, the IEC reported that more than 330 000 registration applications had been processed by midday.

The Springs Advertiser visited registration venues on Saturday, where the turnout was noticeably low.

Officials stationed at Laerskool Werda reported 30 registrations by 14:00, while 32 registrations were reported by 15:00 at Strubenvale Primary School.

One of the residents, 80-year-old Willem Jacobus van Wyk, said he votes so he can have a say in how his community is run.

He talked about the changes he would like to see in his community.

“They must see to it that street lights are working and potholes are fixed,” Van Wyk said.

Van Wyk encouraged young people to exercise their right to vote.

“They must go forward and vote; otherwise, they won’t have a say in what happens in their community,” he said.

The IEC also shared that 30 000 applications were registered on the online platform.

Another resident, 26-year-old Paul Maswanganyi, says he votes to exercise his right and hold local leaders accountable.

“As a young person, it’s crucial to vote so I can be led by the people I believe in. This is a local election, so it doesn’t make sense not to vote and then complain about service delivery,” he said.

He stressed the need for transformation in local leadership.

“We need more capable parties that will make a change in our communities,” he said.

The elections will be held on November 4.
