Western Cape: George Airport goes silent
The policy will be followed permanently at all airports in South Africa managed by Acsa.
From 1 July, George Airport is going silent. “This means there will be no boarding calls or passenger announcements,” said Senzeni Ndebele, a spokesperson from the Airports Company South Africa (Acsa), George Herald reports.
Feedback in a customer survey alerted Acsa to the fact that noise levels are high at airports, especially when frequent calls are made to passengers who have checked in, to board their flights. “It is in line with international best practice. Airports around the world have adopted this in order to provide a better experience and ambience for passengers at airports,” said Ndebele.
To deal with this complaint from passengers, Acsa is introducing a silent airport policy countrywide. It has already been put in place at Cape Town Airport and OR Tambo Airport, which are run by Acsa, and the regional airports are now also going silent.
Ndebele said periodic security announcements or announcements related to emergencies will still be made.
