This is part of the municipality’s Women’s Month activities calling for the end of the senseless killings and abuse of women.
The community of Thokoza last month suffered the loss of Duduzile Zozo, a lesbian. Zozo was brutally murdered in what is believed to be a hate crime.
The municipality, LGBTI and the communities will march to the Thokoza Police Station to hand over a memorandum to the station commander at 9am.
Meanwhile, at 9am a different group of municipal officials, led by the member of mayoral committee for Health and Social Development Makhosazana Maluleke, will also acknowledge the significant role played by women in the society by leading the annual 6km walk at Sam Ntuli Stadium in Thokoza. The walk is to be used to encourage people to break the silence on women and child abuse issues.
On August 12 and 13, the municipality will facilitate the “train a trainer” gender workshop in which organised gender structures in Ekurhuleni will be trained on gender mainstreaming.
Furthermore, the mayor, Clr Mondli Gungubele will use the occasion of Women’s Month to encourage women to be leaders in business.
Clr Gungubele will host 350 business leaders from the Young Women Business Network at a gala dinner on August 30 and 31.
In a bid to ensure that there is sufficient emancipation of women and people living with disabilities, the local authority will convene the Gender and Disability Policy summit on August 30 and 31. The summit will discuss and adopt draft policies that the metro will use to protect the interests of women and people with disabilities.
Aiming to break the stereotype around women and contact sport, Ekurhuleni will close its Women’s Month programme by organising the Women’s Boxing Tournament at the KwaThema Community Hall, where professional women boxers will fight for titles. This occasion will be held on August 31 and will be attended by the mayor.
