Library trees may get axed

The row of trees opposite the Springs library may get the axe to make way for a parking area for the library's buses.

A row of trees opposite the Springs Library may get the axe.

The reason given is that the trees must be removed to make way for a new, secure parking area for the library’s busses.

Pule de Roland Phillips, a Springs resident, recently expressed concern to the newspaper regarding this possible development.

According to Pule, head librarian Tebogo Kekane told her the trees may have to be removed in order to create a safe and secure parking area for the library’s busses.

Pule immediately contacted DA ward councillor Dean Stone about this possible development. Stone said he would get in contact with Gugulethu Maseko, the regional manager of libraries for the metro, to come to a resolution regarding the situation.

“Gugu has not contacted me yet to schedule a meeting at the library to assess their options,” said Stone.

Apparently the library has, in the past, applied for permission to remove the trees, but it was before Stone become the councillor for the area.

He is pushing to meet Gugulethu this week.

Concerned resident Pule De Roland Phillips, does not want to see the trees alongside the library being removed for a parking area.

“Even though I am aware of the previous applications the library made to have the trees removed, I’m going to try my best to ensure this does not happen, even if a petition has to be drafted to prevent it.”

Investigating the area in which the library is situated, it seems the library may have ample space to develop a parking lot without touching the trees, if the library could extend the current parking area where they keep their busses.

“I believe there is a better alternative than to cut down this row of trees to make space for parking,” said Pule.
