No strikes for Gold One
Despite the national mine workers' strike that was set to start on Wednesday, Gold One employees will not be downing tools.
The strike, organised by the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) which represents about 64% of gold miners in the country, is over pay increases.
“We as Gold One are not affiliated with NUM and our staff at the Modder East Operation will not be striking,” says Stevi-Mae Kruger, communications officer for Gold One.
Despite Gold One members striking last year against a court interdict, there is no anticipation from Gold One that the same will happen this year.
“After last year’s strike, we signed a two-year wage agreement with our employees, so if they do strike, they will be in breech of that agreement and we will take disciplinary action against them,” says Kruger.
Kruger believes that the Gold One employees are happy with the wage agreement signed last year and that they do not feel the need to join in the strike.
