Defeated at the end
Springs Stealers ended the local league on a low, losing 4-18 to the formidable Red Sox.
Stealers started well as they fielded first. Francois McGregor pitched well allowing only one runner to reach base, but preventing any runs.
Stealers were then in to bat, facing Jason Palmer pitching for the Rex Sox, and the first three batters were easily sent packing.
After Stealers dispatched the first batter with a strikeout, the runs began to flow in as batter after batter hit in gaps and Red Sox racked up six runs before another strikeout and groundout could get Stealers back on the offensive.
With solid hits from Chris Stone and Juan du Plessis, Stealers added two runs onto the board but that was all they could manage before being sent back to field.
The runs seemed to motivate Stealers’ fielders and they showed some fight preventing Red Sox from scoring another run in the top of the third.
Stealers in to bat once more started well with a solid single from Matthew Scrooby but then Geoffrey Merrifield lofted an outside pitch straight into the hands of the first baseman for an easy, unassisted double play.
Red Sox rejoiced and the last out of the inning was quickly put to bed.
Stealers were back in to field with a change to the pitching duties. Chris, who was pitching, took a while to settle in and three runs for the Red Sox were scored before Stealers could head back to bat.
Chris got hold of a ball and crushed it over the boundary for a solo home run and Stealers rallied around to score once more, to get their last run of the game, ending the inning with the score 9-4 in Red Sox’s favour.
In the fifth inning Stealers completely fell apart. Four errors and five hits later and Red Sox had extended their lead to 15-4 and the Stealers batters had no answer.
As quickly as they came off the field they were back on it. Red Sox scored another three before Stealers could take the bat for the last time.
Stealers’ next three batters were taken out in quick succession ending the local season on a whimper.
They finish the season with 11 wins, 3 losses and one draw.
