Celebrating the environment

"Plant a tree and create shade, plant 1 000 trees and create a forest, plant a million trees and change the world."

These words were spoken by the head of the Department of Environmental Resource Management, Hezekiel Nkosi, to the students of six Ekurhuleni schools at the Ekurhuleni Arbour Day celebration on September 20.

The students, including some from Tsakane High School and Kenneth Masekela Secondary in KwaThema, attended the event where they participated in environmental education activities including water testing, tree planting and water monitoring.

The Member of the Mayoral Committee for Environmental Development, Vuyelwa Mabena, spoke to the students before accompanying them around the Blesbokspruit Environmental Centre grounds to plant a few trees.

“We are proud of these learners who want to be involved in the environment. Go home and plant trees and educate your fellow students and communities,” she said to the students.

She said caring about the environment does not end with just planting a tree, you need to look after the trees planted by you as well as those planted by the generations before you.
