The park is still closed, but the master plan was recently revealed to councillors and members of the public at a briefing session. This was the official comment by Sam Modiba, spokesman of the metro.
According to the parks department’s manager Lindiwe Makubalu the park was closed for to the public two years ago when the lease expired, and is currently not safe for public use.
A consultant was appointed in 2012 but the implementation of the plan will only be implemented in 2014 due to the availability of funds.
Phase one will include the fixing of the fence and closing of the whole park with Clear Vu fencing.
Lindiwe says the upgrading of the playground area is important as it did not comply to with safety rules due to it being next to the water.
Upgrading of ablution blocks and the hall are also part of phase one.
She adds landscaping is necessary and it will include removal of some of the foreign trees which will be replaced at a later stage with indigenousness trees.
“One of the chalets is going to be converted into a house for a caretaker who will be appointed at a later stage,” says Lindiwe
Some of the other chalets will be changed into kiosks.
Phase two will include upgrading of other facilities in the park
Security will be put into place at the entrance when the park is opened for the public.
Lindiwe adds the park will stay under the control of the metro and the public will be notified through the media when the opening will take place.
