Nature takes its course
Fish are dying in the dam at Aston Lake due to a shortage of water and oxygen.
According to avid environmentalist Stan Madden, unfortunately it is a nature phenomenon.
None of the fish in this dam are endangered species and upon closer investigation it was noticed the dead fish were mainly carp.
“The shallow water does not give enough oxygen to the fish and therefore they die, but hopefully rain will change the circumstances quicker than we can,” he says.
Although a lot of dead fish could be seen in the mud, close to 1 000 flamingos were using their last opportunity to get something to eat before they depart.
“There are more lesser than greater flamingos which can be identified being more pink than the other,” adds Stan.
Part of the flock of birds were Avocet with recurved bills, Egyptian geese and capwings or plovers.
Closer to the bank of the dam, fishermen were seen catching most of the ‘still alive’ fish to feed their families.
“If it does not rain soon, we will not be able to catch fish, as they will all be dead by then,” says fisherman Eric Notyline.
