Unbearable stench
Barbara Erasmus woke on Friday morning to find the training room at her business was completely flooded by the most foul smelling sewage after the storm in the early hours of Friday morning.
Barbara runs the Careworkers Services out of her home office in Selection Park and says her business was interrupted by the horrible smell and flooding coming from her training room.
“The Metro don’t clear out the drains before the rain season and then they overflow into our gardens and houses,” she says.
She says after the huge storm hit on Friday morning, her training room and garden as well as her neighbour’s garden were filled with the sewage water.
“This has happened every year. On November 27 we reported to the Metro that the main sewage drain for the street was almost overflowing and two days later, after the storm, our property was flooded,” says Barbara.
She says last year her property flooded on Christmas Eve and they couldn’t get a plumber out.
“This affects my business and costs me extra money every time it happens. My husband is on 24 hour oxygen and the smell here is so bad it might ffect his health,” she says.
She said she tried to call the Metro numbers but they just ring.
“From 7 in the morning myself and two of my employees Trevor Hwangwa and Brighton Masakwa have been trying to clear out the black water from the room. The smell is unbearable and the floor is now water damaged,” says Barbara.
Despite having contacted the Metro two days before her property was flooded, the council had not tended to her complaint resulting in her business being interrupted.
