Eulogy for Dieter Schulz

Dieter Schulz a well known former proprietor of engineering company, Towfab, died at the age of 72 after suffering a heart attack at his home in Wavecrest, Jeffreys Bay on January 11.

Dieter established Towfab in Springs many years ago.

“He named his business Towfab – meaning ‘Tired of working for a boss’,” says his friend, Bill Muller.

Dieter was of German descent and came to South Africa with his family in the late 1960s on contract for a local subsidiary of the German company Solo and settled in Strubenvale where he lived with his family until his retirement.

On expiry of his contract with Solo he joined another well known Springs company, Janton Engineering, where he worked for a number of years until he finally started his own business.

The company initially operated from the premises of the then Trepal Automotive Engineering, owned by Dorino Treccani.

Once well-established, Dieter relocated the business to new premises in the small industrial area in Geduld Extension and served many of the local manufacturing and processing companies on the East Rand.

After his children had completed their tertiary education and had moved on to start their own careers, Dieter finally decided to retire and sold his company to resettle in Jeffreys Bay where he has since lived with his wife, Helga.

Dieter was a jovial, honest, hard-working and well liked person.

Bill says Dieter made many friends over the years both in Springs and in Jeffreys Bay and will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

“Farewell my friend until we meet again,” says Bill sadly.
