Financial assistance from metro

A briefing was held by the Ekurhuleni mayor Mondli Gungubele at Germiston Lake last Tuesday.

It was in regard to the council’s decision to give R1-million to each ward for the establishment of projects that will benefit the wards.

The mayor gave direction on how the money will be allocated and should be spent.

In six months, an assessment will be done to ensure that the money was well-spent.

According to metro spokesman Themba Gadebe, the money will not literally be given to the wards.

He says the wards will identify projects worth R1-m in their area that they need the city to assist with.

According to Gadebe there is clear criteria that the ward should conform to in the selection of their project.

The political strategic overseeing committee will make the decision as to how the money will be spent.

The committee consists of the member of the mayoral committee of the city planing and economic development, finance, the chief whip and the representative from the opposition.

After six months, a comprehensive report will serve in council to ensure that the money given was well-spent.
