RYLA seminar for youth

The Rotary Club of Springs will facilitate a Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) seminar for the youth.

The Rotary Club of Springs will facilitate a Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) seminar for the youth.

The programme is scheduled to take place at the eMseni Christian Centre in Benoni and will run from 2pm on February 28 to 1pm, on March 2.

“Although the camp takes place at the eMseni Christian Centre, students of all races, genders, denominations or religious backgrounds are accepted,” says club president Geoff Havenga.

Rotary is a non-political and non-sexist organisation and therefore all students are afforded the same treatment.

RYLA is an outstanding programme, which provides young people of Grade 11 and 12 levels, the opportunity to develop their leadership capabilities.

He adds it is an intensive all-expenses-paid camp, to discuss leadership skills and to learn those skills through practice.

Officially adopted by Rotary International in 1971, RYLA is one of the most significant and fastest-growing programmes of Rotary service. Each year, thousands of young people take part in the programme world-wide.

Geoff says the programme will involve directed group discussions, debates, practical exercises and lead-in lectures by highly regarded personalities, on subjects inculding goal-setting, teamwork and team-building, crisis management, conflict resolution, you and the environment, communication and decision-making.

The awardees attending the RYLA seminars can expect to further develop their personal and leadership skills in the following key areas including communication skills.

n Participants will have the opportunity to develop interpersonal skills, communicate, listen and write more effectively and engage in some form of public speaking in a warm, supportive environment.

n Personal qualities: participants will have the opportunity to identify the various types of personality, help people to get along with each other, manage their own time more effectively, avoid stressful situations and plan for healthier living.

n Leadership: they will have the opportunity to identify the characteristics of effective leaders, become aware of the various styles of leadership and observe effective leaders operating in a meeting situation.

n During the problem-solving strategies they will have to brainstorm and think creatively, engage in practical problem solving and decision making activities and use a problem solving model in a practical situation.

“These and other issues are covered in lectures, workshops, small and large group discussions as well as the utilisation of films and video tapes as learning aids,” says Geoff.

There is also “time out” for team recreational activities and time to get to know other awardees.

A comment often made by previous awardees states: “It was an experience of a lifetime and an opportunity not to be missed.”

The whole camp is coordinated and organised by an active committee comprising a number of Rotarians and past RYLA awardees.
