EMD is training peace corps

Each ward will have10 members to help fight crime

Ekurhuleni Peace Corps is ready to fight crime.

Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago, Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department spokesman said the metro’s mayor, Mondli Gungubele in his State of the City Address last year, announced that 1 010 members of the Peace Corps will be deployed in Ekurhuleni. This is 10 for each of the 101 wards of the metro.

In May 2013 the EMPD already undertook a pilot project where they enlisted 100 Peace Corps members to assist in fighting crime in their area. These men and women are currently deployed in various wards.

The rest, 910, will be enlisted after interviews that were conducted during March 11 to 13.

Kgasago said the enlisting will be done in batches of 150.

By April 1, the first batch will be appointed to commence with a five-week training at EMPD’s Training Academy in Kwa-Thema.

He estimated that each ward in the metro would have 10 Peace Corps members by October 2014.
