Transnet feeds the people

Transnet, in partnership with the Department of Social Development and the Sector Four CPF, donated food parcels to residents of Gugulethu and Everest informal settlements on Wednesday.

The handover took place at the Transnet Community Centre.

Residents from the two informal settlements gathered at the centre to collect their raw food parcels.

According to the manager of the community centre, Peter Pelele, over 100 food parcels were handed out on the day.

Upon receiving her food parcel, Everest resident, Phyllis Mahlake said, “I am happy to receive the food, it will make a difference in mine and my family’s lives.

“This came as a blessing to me.”

Another Everest resident, Kealina Mntloung, said, “I am unemployed and have no other source of income, so I am very happy to receive the food.”

Pelele says, “Our main goal is to address poverty and unemployment within these areas.”

A soup kitchen is currently under construction on the premises and a garden is being established.

The Sonka Sethu (Our Bread) Project is being put into place to grow vegetables for the community and to help supplement the soup kitchen.

According to deputy chairman of Sector Four, Ahmed Chouglay, the vegetables will also be sold to local markets.

“In time to come, we will be assisting all the people in Sector Four who are in need of assistance,” says Chouglay.
