Council chamber aircon stolen
It was nabbed under the noses of two security companies
Parts of the air conditioner in the Ekurhuleni Metro council chamber in Germiston were carried away from under the noses of two security companies over an extended period last .
This transpired after Izak Berg, Independent Ratepayers’ Association (Irasa) member of Ekurhuleni Metro posed questions to the member of the mayoral committee (MMC) for Corporate and Shared Services, Pelisa Nkunjana.
Berg said components of the air conditioners were stolen over a weekend.
In the written answers the MMC supplied to Berg during last Thursday’s council meeting in this chamber she answered that the three air conditioner units, worth R250 000, were stripped over time during the winter of 2013.
This theft happened despite there being two security companies on duty at the time when the crime was discovered in August 2013 – an in-house company and a private security firm.
The bulk of the frames of the air conditioners and other components were left fixed on the roof.
The three air conditioners weighed about 1.2 tons each and if they had to be moved as a unit a crane and 22-wheel horse-and-trailer truck would have been needed.
The MMC replied that no action has as yet been taken against the guards on duty, as it was not clear exactly when the incident took place.
The stolen air conditioner units were insured and a new unit will be installed by April 30.
