Mayor laments death of officers

The mayor is concerned about motorists killing law enforcement officials

The Ekurhuleni mayor councillor Mondli Gungubele has lamented the recent deaths of metro police officers on the roads of the city.

Reacting to news that a metro police officer had been run over by a car early this morning, Gungubele called on motorists to always be more vigilant in looking out for officers on the roads and exercise more caution.

“These officers are there to save the lives of the very same motorists who run them over. “This is quite sad and unacceptable.

“we have lost two officers in the same number of months and it is time that we call on communities and road users in general to assist us to stop these senseless accidents,” he says.

This morning just before 6am, officer Danny Hunt, was run over by a speeding car while performing his speed duties on the Paul Kruger Highway between Benoni and Springs.

Late last month officer France Langa was run over by a taxi on the R23 in Brakpan – also in the morning. In both incidents the officers died instantly.

“We need these officers for law enforcement. The more officers we h ave in our employ the better the chances of beating all forms of lawlessness in our region – be it communities of our roads,” said Gungubele.

“We cannot go on lik this.

Gungubele has passed his condolences to the bereaved family.
