The duck pond’s water level at George Sutter Park is dropping again.
DA ward councillor for the area, Shadow Shabangu, says drastic steps need to be taken by the metro to solve this ongoing problem.
He says the metro appointed two contractors, one to supply a pump and one to install it.
In October last year Sam Modiba, previous metro spokesman, said the contractor appointed to change the pump also had to remove the old one, but the old one somehow fell into the borehole.
“The contractor was busy with operations to remove the pump whereafter the new one will be installed.”
Shabangu said he brought it to the metro’s attention that the stormwater drains leading into the pond, need to be opened, so when it rains, water should be channelled into it.
But nothing has come of his request.
“I am going to bring this to the attention of the council again. I also want them to replace the old fence with the same type of fence they have put around the war memorial,” he adds.
Selection Park Fire Station came to the rescue again in January, by pumping water into the pond from a fire hydrant.
Shabangu claims that is the only solution at the moment – to ask for their assistance again.
At the time of going to press, no comment was received from the metro.
