The traffic lights are still not working at the Bakerton Taxi Rank intersection.
After the protestors of Gugulethu/Everest vandalised the electrical box and the traffic lights, the metro had to put a plan together to repair them.
Unrest broke out in the early morning hours of May 8, resulting in damage to these traffic lights. “Tired of waiting” (Advertiser, May 8).
Themba Gadebe, metro spokesman, said, “The damage done to these traffic lights is as good as installing a new set of lights altogether.”
All the cables supplying electricity to the traffic lights were switched off on the box after the vandalism.
DA ward councillor Ramesh Sheodin says it is a big challenge for the metro to keep up with the trend where these traffic lights are out of order or knocked down.
He claims the traffic light in question and the one at Slovo Park are knocked down on a regular basis over weekends by motorists.
“This time is a bit worse than just a light being knocked down, but I am pleased with the way the metro is dealing with the situation.”
Gadebe says the poles, controllers and traffic light heads need to be purchased to restore the traffic flow.
“The controller box needs to be redesigned and it is expected that the process will be completed by tomorrow (Friday).”
