A man was arrested at The Avenues parking in Sixth Street, CBD, last Thursday.
Captain Johannes Ramphora, spokesperson for the Springs police, says the man was in possession of a gate remote control and was walking around the parking area.
This control is pressed the same time the motorist activates their remote to lock the vehicle and cancels the vehicle remote signal.
The process takes 30 seconds before the vehicle remote is activated again.
Ramphora says they demonstrated the “scam” to the acting station commander Colonel Karen Stoltz in the parking area at the Springs Police Station.
To the shock of Stoltz, she could not use her remote for 30 seconds after the gate remote was used.
Ramphora says it only takes 30 seconds to open someone’s vehicle and take what the thieves want.
Motorists should be vigilant and double check if their vehicles are locked before they leave it.
