Crime is a scourge that respects no borders and affects all nations.
Captain Johannes Ramphora, Spokesman for the Springs police, says they are confronted with dealing with the serious nature of various crimes.
Despite the challenges, a lot of progress has been made to fight crime over the past 12 months.
The progress can be attributed to the multi-disciplinary approach used by the police officials in their fight against crime.
Management developed strategies to deal with crime for the past year and are encouraged by the presence of the Community Police Forums, businesses, churches and other stakeholders.
He says when heartless criminals abuse young children, innocent women are being raped and dysfunctional families experience domestic violence as normal, police officials often get blamed, instead of them focusing on the cause of the offence.
The power of fighting crime lies with the community.
Ramphora says police officials sometimes have to deal with horrific crime and accident scenes as well as high job risks and task demands on a daily basis.
“The officials sometimes have to absorb the communities’ emotional reactions of anger and frustration as well as sadness.”
Although the officials are sometimes exposed to negative media reports, criticism from the community, social-economic and political dynamics, they are part of the same community that criticises them when they are off duty.
Ramphora adds the Springs police officials will endeavour to make the holidays and festive seasons safer.
