DA warns of electricity catastrophe

Jackie Reilly, a DA councillor in the metro submitted a motion on electricity at the August council meeting.

A power supply catastrophe is looming in Ekurhuleni, warns Jackie Reilly, a DA councillor in the metro.

She submitted a motion at the August council meeting, which calls for a comprehensive report on money spent on the metro’s electricity network.

The report has to detail the costs incurred by the metro on repairs, maintenance and upgrades during the 2013/2014 financial year as well as what was budgeted for during the current financial year.

She also requested that this report has to be submitted to the metro at its September meeting.

Reilly says it was a surprise when Aubrey Nxumalo, member of the mayoral committee for energy, took the motion seriously and acknowledged that there was a problem.

He committed himself to provide the information the DA wants.

She says the DA was expecting the ANC to shoot down the motion, with their “everything is fine, the DA is just making trouble”- manner.

If nothing else, this reaction displays how dire the situation truly is and what residents could be in for in the coming years if the metro does not immediately make upgrading the power supply system its number one priority.
